This year marks the 1700th anniversary of the First Council of Nicaea—an extraordinary moment in the life of the Church. Convened by Emperor Constantine in the year 325, the Council brought together bishops from across the Christian world to address urgent questions of faith and unity. Most notably, Nicaea gave us the foundation of the Nicene Creed, a profession of faith we still proclaim each Sunday at Mass.
At Nicaea, the Church affirmed that Jesus Christ is “God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,” fully divine and one in being with the Father. This truth remains at the heart of our Catholic faith and identity. Despite divisions, persecutions, and the passage of centuries, the accomplishments of the council at Nicaea still provide a foundation from which Christians from various denominations experience unity.
As we commemorate the anniversary of the council, let us give thanks for the gift of our faith and the courage of those early bishops who defended it. May the Holy Spirit continue to guide the Church in every age.
