Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension!
From a sermon by St. Augustine: “So the Apostle says ‘Just as the human body, which has many members, is a unity, because all the different members make one body, so it is also with Christ.’ He too has many members, but one body. Out of compassion for us He descended from Heaven, and although He ascended alone, we also ascend, because we are in Him by grace.”
The Ascension gives us hope that we will one day join Christ in Heaven, because Christ the head cannot be truly separated from His body, the Church. We are united to Him and His saving work through the gift of the Holy Spirit (which we celebrate in one week on Pentecost!), and after we have completed our earthly lives, we have the confidence that we can go where He is.
On this day, during this Jubilee Year that is focused on Hope, let us deepen our trust that the Lord is with us always (Matthew 11:20) and that He goes before us in our works of evangelization and mercy.
