Today is the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, and on this day, we honor the birth of the greatest of the prophets who was born to prepare the way for Jesus. John was born to Mary’s kinswoman, Elizabeth, and her husband Zachariah in their old age. As an adult, he spent his days in the desert preaching repentance and the coming of the Kingdom of God in the Messiah who would come after him. “…but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” (Matthew 3:11)
