• “As Catholics, we are called to lift up humanity and remember that we are all God’s creatures.”

      On Thursday, June 19, Catholics throughout our diocese gathered to recognize Juneteenth through the lens of their Catholic faith.

      Two celebrations were held in our diocese to commemorate the day in 1865 when the enslaved people of Galveston, Texas, finally received the news of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Many gathered at the celebrations to join together in prayer, attend Mass, hear from speakers, and share about Black Catholic history.
