Throwback Thursday: St. Joseph, Racine Celebrating 150 years! Archbishop Grob to Celebrate with Mass.
St. Joseph Parish in Racine can trace their roots back to 1862, when about 47 German-speaking Catholic families at St. Mary’s in Racine decided to organize a new parish. Four men purchased lots in the “wilderness” about a mile north of downtown Racine and deeded the land to Archbishop Henni in 1867. However, it was not until 1875 when the parish was formally assigned a pastor and the church building was completed. In 1883, St. Joseph purchased a set of three-belled chimes from the old Milwaukee courthouse.
In 1877 the Sisters of St. Dominic were appointed to the school to replace the lay teachers. The current school building was built in 1929. In 1947, the parish began offering religious education classes for children attending public schools. Interestingly, the school did not charge any tuition until 1988!
Join Archbishop Grob and parishioners as they celebrate the 150th anniversary of St. Joseph Parish with Mass on Saturday, July 19, 2025 at 4 p.m. All are welcome!
St. Joseph Parish Racine is located at 1533 Erie Street in Racine.
